How to give Claude memory that carries over between chats

By Anna (AB) Sutton · Updated

Short answer

Keep your context in a single plain-text file, a Carrierfile. Paste it into a new Claude chat and type unpack. Claude picks up who you are, what you’re working on, and how you like to work. At the end, type pack up and save the updated file for next time. It works the same on free and paid plans, and in ChatGPT, Gemini, or any other AI.

Why Claude forgets you

Every new Claude chat starts close to blank. Claude has built-in features that help, like memory and Projects, but they have limits:

The fix: carry your own memory

A Carrierfile is a plain-text file that holds what Claude needs to be useful to you: who you are, your current projects, how you want it to work with you, and a running log of your sessions together. Claude is good at following a clear, structured file like this, and because it’s just text, you can read and edit every word.

Step by step

  1. Build your file. Use the free builder. It takes about five minutes, and nothing you type leaves your browser.
  2. Start a new Claude chat. Paste the whole file in and type unpack. Claude reads it, confirms it’s loaded, and asks what you want to work on.
  3. Work normally. Say “remember this” when something is worth keeping. Claude drafts a one-line memory and waits for your OK.
  4. Type pack up when you’re done. Claude proposes what to remember, then outputs the complete updated file.
  5. Save it. Copy the file and save over your old one. Next session, paste it in again.

Tips for Claude

Ready for more? Give Claude a castle

If you use Claude’s desktop app on a paid plan, you can link a folder on your computer to it. That folder becomes a castle: a home where your agent keeps its memory, identity, and projects in their own files, with your Carrierfile at the center. No coding. How to build your own AI agent explains it, and the first Castle Blocks lesson is free.

Questions people ask

Does Claude remember previous conversations?

Claude has built-in memory and Projects, but what it keeps depends on your plan, the platform decides what is stored, and it only works inside Claude. A Carrierfile is a plain-text file you own that works the same on every plan and in every AI.

Can I use a Carrierfile with the free version of Claude?

Yes. You only need to paste text into a chat, which works on any plan, so your Carrierfile works exactly the same on a free account as on a paid one.

Should I put my Carrierfile in a Claude Project?

You can. Adding it to a Project means every chat in that Project starts with it. Keep your own master copy and save the updated file after each pack up.

Can Claude be my own AI agent?

Yes. A Carrierfile already gives Claude a name, identity, and memory. With Claude’s desktop app on a paid plan, you can go further and give your agent a castle: a linked folder where it keeps its own files and manages your projects.

Build your Carrierfile. It takes about five minutes, runs entirely in your browser, and works in any AI. Free, no account.
